Maryland's energy future should be both affordable & reliable.

Maryland is at an unprecedented energy crossroads. Taking the right path is crucial for our economy and our future.  Energy Future Maryland advocates for a way forward that will lead to an energy future that is affordable and reliable for Marylanders.

The Challenges

Growing Demand Outpacing Available Power

The demand for power in Maryland is growing at the same time as legacy fossil-fuel generation plants are closing down. The state already imports 40 percent of its power from across state lines, and with the expanded use of electric vehicles, electrification of home appliances and the growth of cloud computing and AI, we’re using more power than ever before. Our electric grid hasn’t kept pace.

40% of Maryland's energy is imported from out-of-state.

Potential for Failure

Congestion on the already overstressed grid is growing and so is the likelihood of rolling brownouts and blackouts. Our most vulnerable residents will be the most impacted by power outages on our hottest and coldest days.

59% of Marylanders believe job growth and economic growth in Maryland depend on affordable and available power (February 2025 Poll).

Rising Rates

Maryland already has some of the most expensive rates for power in the region, and Maryland families are feeling the crunch of rates rising even further. Without added capacity and updated infrastructure, Maryland will be caught in a vicious cycle of cost increases with ratepayers paying the price.

66% of Marylanders believe that building more capacity can help lower costs (February 2025 Poll).

The Solution

Maryland Needs More Transmission Infrastructure

Maryland needs more energy transmission infrastructure in order to address these challenges today and prepare us for the future.
